Description

Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami
From the book “Sri Vraja-maṇḍala-parikramā”:
This place is situated two miles north of Tiloyāra. While playing here, the sakhās decorated Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s body with sixteen kinds of ornaments (śṛṅgāra). Sometimes, Śrī Kṛṣṇa combed and decorated Śrīmatī Rādhikā’s hair with sixteen kinds of ornaments. The banyan (vaṭa) tree that was once here has now disappeared, but the village is still known by the name of Śṛṅgāravaṭa or Śṛṅgāra-gaon.
Rajashekhara Dasa
From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:
The Bhakti-ratnakara says, “See this Shringara-vata where Krishna decorated Radhika in different ways.” The word ‘shringara’ means to ‘decorate’ or to ‘dress with ornaments’ and the name of this village has been derived from the pastime of shringara-lila that took place here. There was formerly a very large forest here with many banyan trees, which in Sanskrit are called vata-vriksa. Beneath one of these vata-vriksa trees known as Shringara-vata, Krishna very expertly decorated Radharani with the sixteen types of ornaments. After Radharani was nicely decorated the gopis also decorated Krishna with sixteen types of ornaments, after which the gopis sat the ‘divine lovers’ on a swing and everyone enjoyed jhulana-lila pastimes.
