Description

Rajashekhara Dasa
From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:
It is said that once Lord Indra’s elephant carrier Airavata, came to this place from heaven for the purpose showering Radharani with the cooling waters of the heavenly oceans. On the order of Lord Brahma, Purnamasi performed the crowning ceremony of Radharani at nearby Umraya, declaring Her as the ‘Queen of Vraja’. It is thought that Airavata arrived at that time to take part in the bathing ceremony, thus the village became known as Hathiya, which is derived from the word ‘hathi’, meaning an ‘elephant’.
