Description

Rajashekhara Dasa
From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:
Built in sandstone and ornately designed with chatris around its perimeter, Shiva Tala is one of Mathura’s most famous kundas and it is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is said to have performed penance at this place in order to achieve the mercy of Lord Krishna. The word ‘tala’ means a ‘lake’, or ‘large kunda’. The Vishnu Purana says, “Mahadeva executed his penances at Mathura.” The Skanda Purana says, “Is there any type of result which cannot be attained in Mathura, where Kshetrapala Mahadeva exists eternally.”
