Rajashekhara Dasa
From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:
This large kund is believed to have been located within the walls of King Kamsa’s prison and after giving birth to baby Krishna, mother Devaki came to Potra-kunda to bathe and also wash Krishna’s baby-linen. It is said, “Being overcome with ecstatic love, Devaki happily washed Krishna’s cloth in the kunda”. Due to this pastime the kunda became known locally as ‘potra-kunda’, which is said to be derived from the word ‘putra’ which means ‘son’. Some researchers say that the kunda was formerly known as Pavitra-kunda, the word ‘pavitra’ means that which is ‘pure’, but over the years it has become more commonly known simply as Potra-kunda, which they say is simply a corruption of the word pavitra.
