From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:

According to the local brahmana panditas this is the place where Lord Krishna slew the elephant Kuvalayapida before entering the Ranga-shala to take part in the danur-yajna. The Shrimad Bhagavatam (10.43.8-10) says, “Lord Krishna then grabbed the powerful Kuvalayapida by the tail and playfully dragged him twenty-five bow-lengths as easily as Garuda might drag a snake. Krishna then came face to face with the elephant and slapped him then ran away. Kuvalayapida pursued the Lord, managing to touch Him again and again with each step, but Krishna outmaneuvered the elephant and made him trip and fall.” It is said that during the fight with the elephant Kuvalayapida, Balarama also dragged the elephant around by its tail. The fight continued until it reached this spot when Krishna suddenly ripped out the elephant’s tusk and delivered the final blow to its head that stopped the rampaging elephant dead in its tracks.
