    Rajashekhara Dasa

From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:

The local legend says that one day the gopis were fetching water for their families when their minds became captivated by the enchanting sound of Krishna’s flute. Although they wanted to abandon their duties and run to Krishna, they could not and therefore felt frustrated at not being able to enjoy pastimes with Him. The following day the gopis complained to Krishna saying “why were you playing your flute at a time when we were all engaged in our household duties.” Krishna feigned ignorance of the matter and then the gopis said, “Who was that person sitting under the tamala tree playing such attractive tunes on the flute?” Krishna then replied by saying, “Ham nehi gaya, ham nehi bolaya – I didn’t go there and I didn’t call you.” Therefore the name of the village became ‘Naganya’ and is derived from the words ‘nehi gaya’.
