From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:

In the Bhakti-ratnakara it says, “O Shrinivasa, see here Dhulauda Grama where the sky became filled with the dust raised by the cows.” The word ‘dhula’ means ‘dust’ which was raised by the cow’s hooves’ and ‘uda’ means that the dust was ‘flying around’. When cows are being herded there are always clouds of dust being raised by their hooves as they walk along the dusty trails. This dust raised by cows is considered to be very auspicious and is one of the symbols of Vedic religion. Shri Krishna Himself was always covered in this same sacred dust when He would return from the pasturing grounds in the evening. This dust which covered the Lord’s body, hair, and lotus face, simply increased the beauty of His transcendental form. The gopis would congregate in the evenings waiting for Krishna to return home to Nandagrama with the cows, just to get a glimpse of His exquisite beauty while covered in ‘dhula’.
