Description

Rajashekhara Dasa
From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:
This is the place where Krishna dressed up as one of the gopis named Shyama-sakhi and this is how the village got the name Samai, which is derived from the word sanvari meaning one with a blackish complexion, or in other words Shyama-sakhi, the sakhi with the dark (shyama) complexion. One day due to some lovers tiff, Shrimati Radharani, being extremely angry with Krishna, came here in a sullen mood and sat beneath a forest bower to lament. Feeling unhappy at seeing His beloved Radha in such an anguished condition, Krishna devised a means to relieve Radharani of Her ‘mana’. Expertly disguising Himself as one of Radha’s confidential advisers in matters of love, named Shyama-sakhi, Krishna came before Radharani and began to pacify Her by speaking sweet words of encouragement while heaping praises on Krishna by saying He was a great hero and a devoted lover and was unable to live for a moment without His beloved Radharani. Within a short time, the imitation Shyama-sakhi was able to completely dispel Radharani’s ‘mana’ and had also cleverly made arrangements for Radharani to meet Her pining lover Krishna in a nearby forest grove.
