From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:
It is said by local panditas that this ancient Deity of Govindaji was installed here by Vajranabha Maharaja, however there are no historical records to prove such a claim. Undoubtedly the Deity is very old and during the period of Maharaja Vajranabha reign at Mathura, many Deities were installed throughout Vraja Mandala. This Deity of Radha Govinda is considered to be the presiding Deity of Surabhivana in which Govinda-kunda is located. The forest of Surabhivana stretches from Aniyora up to Apsara-kunda.
