The Deity is also known locally as Dauji, meaning the elder brother of Krishna. Standing next to Dauji one can see the small Deity of Dauji’s younger brother Krishna. The local brahmanas say that this ancient Deity of Lord Sankarshana was established by Vajranabha Maharaja although there is no historical evidence to support the claim. Many important Deities appeared around the bhakti-renaissance period during Maharaja Vajranabha’s reign at Mathura but not all of them were installed directly by Vajranabha himself.
