Description

Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami
From the book “Sri Vraja-mandala-parikrama”:
The gopa Toṣa, an expert dancer, lived in this village. He taught Śrī Kṛṣṇa how to dance expertly too, by which Kṛṣṇa became extremely satisfied (santoṣa). Tarasa-kuṇḍa lies here. Kṛṣṇa, Balarāma, the cows and cowherd boys would feel most satisfied when they drank the water of this kuṇḍa. This village is therefore called Toṣa-gaon.
Rajashekhara Dasa
From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:
Krishna and Balarama accompanied by the cowherd boys used to come to this place with Their cows and while the cows were grazing in the pasturing ground, Krishna and Balarama and Their friends would enjoy transcendental pastimes on the bank of the nearby Tosha-kunda. They would sing, dance, and play games as well as enjoy wonderful picnics; feasting on various tasty preparations after which They all felt great satisfaction. Therefore the kunda where they enjoyed this pastime became known as Tosha-kunda. The word ‘tosha’ means ‘satisfaction’ and this is one of the reasons why this village got its name. The local people call this kunda as Tarasi-kunda; the word ‘tarasi’ also means ‘satisfaction’ in the native bhojpuri language. It is said in the Bhakti-ratnakara, “Close to Vasati is the place called Tosh, where Balarama and Krishna played with all Their friends and felt great satisfaction.” One of Krishna’s very close friends whose name was Tosha also lived in this village and some say this is reason why the village got its name. It is said that Krishna’s friend Tosha was such an expert dancer that even Krishna would take dancing lessons from him.
