Description

Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami
From the book “Sri Vraja-mandala-parikrama”:
This village lies two miles from Toṣa-gaon. Its previous name was Dakṣiṇa-grāma. While Śrīmatī Rādhikā’s leftist mood, vāmya- bhāva, is renowned and is most pleasing to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, each and every transcendental sentiment of every heroine exists in Śrīmatī Rādhikā. Therefore, under certain special circumstances, Kiśorījī pleases Śrī Kṛṣṇa by manifesting the bhāvas of a right-wing heroine (dakṣiṇa nāyikā). This village is thus also called Dakṣiṇa-grāma.
It is also known as Jakṣiṇa or Jakhina-grāma, because Dāūjī once killed a yakṣiṇī here who was obstructing Kṛṣṇa’s playful pastimes. Balabhadra-kuṇḍa lies here, and one can take darśana of the deities Baladeva and Revatī.
Rajashekhara Dasa
From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:
This village achieved the name of Dakshina Grama from a pastime performed here by Radharani, when She exhibited the mood (bhava) and temperament of a dakshina-nayaki gopi. The present name of the village is Jakhangaon which is a corrupted form of the word ‘dakshina’. There are a number of sacred kundas here and the most famous is known as Balabhadra Kunda.
Located near this kunda is the Dauji Mandira containing an ancient Deity of Lord Balarama known locally as Dauji. This ancient Deity of Lord Balarama (Dauji) was found in the nearby Balabhadra-kunda and was installed in this small temple located next to the kunda. There is also a beautiful Deity of Ganga Mata installed in this same temple.
It is mentioned in the Bhakti-ratnakara that one day Radharani, who is famous as a vama-nayaki gopi (left-wing heroin), was absorbed in transcendental pastimes with Krishna when She suddenly exhibited the mood of a dakshina-nayaki (right-wing heroin) simply for the purpose of increasing Krishna’s transcendental pleasure. Unlike a vama-nayaki, a dakshina-nayaki gopi is very passive and does not like to see the proud behavior of other women and never displays any pride herself in front of her lover. On the contrary, she always speaks very sweet and pleasing words full of submission and is very easily subdued by the sweet words uttered by her beloved. When Krishna noticed the sudden change in Radharani’s mood, He became extremely delighted and His transcendental ecstasy immediately increased.
With regard to the gopis known as vama-nayaki, they are always extremely proud of their female attributes and womanly beauty and will immediately feel jealous anger (mana) if ignored or shown disrespect by their lover. They may become obstinate and behave in a contrary manner if their lover is not submissive to their desires. The vama-nayaki, or left wing gopis, are exemplified by both Radharani and Lalita. Whereas the dakshina-nayaki, or right wing gopi, is best exemplified by Tungavidya. Even though Radharani is the fountain-head of all bhavas, simply for Krishna’s pleasure, She can exhibit any bhava if She thinks it will increase Krishna’s transcendental pleasure. However, out of all the various moods exhibited by Radharani and the gopis, the mood of a vama-nayaki is the most pleasing to Krishna. The word ‘nayaki’ means both ‘heroin’ as well as beloved.
Besides Balabhadra kunda, there are a number of other kundas located near to the Dauji temple including Revati-kunda (named after Lord Balarama’s consort) as well as Jamadagni-kunda and Renuka-kunda, named after Lord Parashurama’s father and mother whose ashrama was believed to have been located at Renuka Grama. There is also the Kacchavana-kunda nearby which is full of ‘kacchua’, or ‘turtles’.
