From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:

After Krishna had revealed His twelve-armed form of Govindadeva, His Narayana feature before Garuda, the gopis heard about this from the cowherd boys, however they remained very skeptical because they knew about Krishna’s boasting talks. When the gopis met Krishna here at this place they requested Him to also show them the same twelve-armed form of Narayana that the cowherd boys had seen, otherwise they could not believe that He was actually the master of Garuda, the king of birds. Therefore Krishna exhibited the same twelve-armed Narayana form just to satisfy the desire of the gopis, hence this village became known as Narayanapura.
