    Rajashekhara Dasa

From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:

To the east of Sansa is the village of Basai. One day when Krishna was enjoying intimate loving pastimes with the gopis. Each gopi suddenly began to think that if somehow or other she could subdue Krishna, then Krishna would be hers alone and would love her far more than any of the other gopi. Because each gopi was thinking that Krishna should take exclusive shelter of her alone, this place became celebrated as ‘basai’, which is derived from the word ‘vasa’ which means to ‘take shelter’. Hence this village became known as Basai. Another opinion is that because each gopi desired to possess Krishna as her very own, the village name of Basai was derived from the Sanskrit word ‘bhusura’ means to ‘possess’.
