Description

Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami
From the book “Sri Vraja-maṇḍala-parikramā”:
The village of Mukharāī lies one mile south of Rādhā-kuṇḍa, along the road to Vṛndāvana. It is the home of old Mukharā, the maternal grandmother of Śrīmatī Rādhikā. When Yaśodā was a baby, Mukharā breast-fed her. With great pleasure, Grandmother Mukharā secretly arranged meetings between Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa, the Youthful Couple. She is the mother-in-law of Mahārāja Vṛṣabhānu and the mother of Kirtidā. The Vrajavāsīs used to address her with the name Baḍāī. With great eagerness, she would visit Śrīmatī Rādhikā and Kṛṣṇa every morning. There is a temple of Mukharā-devī here.
Rajashekhara Dasa
From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:
This village has been named after Shrimati Radharani’s maternal grandmother whose name was Mukhara Devi. She was the mother of Kirtida who was the wife of Vrishabhanu Maharaja and Radharani’s mother. Because Mukhara lived at this place, this is how the village achieved the name of Mukharai. It is said that Mukhara Devi used to take great transcendental pleasure in arranging secret meetings between Radha and Krishna, and every morning without fail, she went to take darshana of the ‘divine couple’. In the village one can see the beautiful Mukhara-kunda and the famous Mukhara Devi Mandira. On the altar in this temple are the Deities of Mukhara Devi, Shrimati Radharani and Her mother Kirtida Devi. There is also a famous bhajana-shila within the temple which is a hollow sandstone rock from Govardhana Hill that sounds just like a bell when it is struck.
