Description

Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami
From the book “Sri Vraja-maṇḍala-parikramā”:
Khāmī-gaon is situated on the border of Vraja. To establish the boundary of Vraja, Śrī Vajranābha Mahārāja constructed a stone pillar (khambā) here. The village of Vanacarī is nearby. These two villages are situated on the north-west border of Vraja, four miles north-east of Hoḍal. Here, are temples of Lakṣmī-Nārāyaṇa and Mahādeva.
Rajashekhara Dasa
From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:
The Bhakti-ratnakara says, “Then there was Khani-grama in Khambahara, where Krishna and Balarama grazed Their cattle. Khani-grama is on one boundary of Vraja.” The name of this village is derived from the word ‘khamba’ which means a ‘stone pillar’. This particular pillar is said to have been established here on top of a hill by King Vajranabha to mark the northern boundary of Vraja. In this regard the boundary in question marks the inner-core area of Vraja where all the lila-sthana’s or pastime places including the twelve sacred forests (dwadasa-vana) are located.
