    Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami

    From the book “Sri Vraja-maṇḍala-parikramā”:

Paya-gaon lies six miles east of Kosī. Although the mothers of Kṛṣṇa, Balarāma and the gopas would daily send lunch for them, one day, their lunches arrived late. In hunger, Śrī Kṛṣṇa and the sakhās went to this village and drank milk (paya). This village has therefore become known as Paya-gaon. North of Paya-gaon is Paya-sarovara, as well as a grove beautifully decorated with tamāla and kadamba trees.

    Rajashekhara Dasa

From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:

In the Bhakti-ratnakara it is said, “In Paya-grama, Krishna drank paya with His friends.” The name of the village is derived from the word ’paya’ or ‘payai’ which refers to milk. The village achieved its name because one day Krishna and His cowherd boyfriends were feeling hungry and as mother Yashoda had not arrived with lunch, Krishna and his sakhas came to this place where they were offered paya by the ladies of the village. There is a kunda in the village called Paya-sarovara.
