Description

Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami
From the book “Sri Vraja-maṇḍala-parikramā”:
Situated near Jāvaṭa, this village lies between Khāyaro and Āñjanauka. It was here that Kṛṣṇa actually killed Bakāsura. This village is also called Cillī because Kṛṣṇa caught the beak of Bakāsura and split it (cīrnā) down the middle.
Rajashekhara Dasa
From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:
The Bhakti-ratnakara says, “Near Yavat is Bakathara, where Krishna killed Bakasura.” This village received its name because Krishna killed the giant duck-demon named Bakasura at this spot, hence the name Bakathara. The word ‘baka’ actually means a type of ‘crane’ commonly called an egret and the word ‘thara’ means a ‘chopping block’ or place where animals are sacrificed in a Vedic yajna, by having their heads chopped off on a special type of guillotine. This village is also known as Cilli, which is a corruption of the word ‘cir-na’, which means to ‘split’ or ‘bifurcate’, because Krishna killed the duck-demon Bakasura by splitting his beak in two parts. There is a kunda to the east of the village known as Bakathara-kunda and on the western bank of this kunda is the actual spot where the demon Bakasura was slain.
