Description

Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami
From the book “Sri Vraja-mandala-parikrama”:
This place is situated two miles south-west of Bahulāvana. After seeing the dancing of the peacocks (mayūra) here, Śrī Kṛṣṇa started dancing with great pleasure in the midst of His beloved gopīs. The peacocks very happily gave one of their beautiful multi-coloured feathers as an offering to Kṛṣṇa, which He placed on His head. Mayūra-kuṇḍa is a place of darśana here.
Rajashekhara Dasa
From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:
The Bhakti-ratnakara says, “The next place they visited was Mayura-grama where Krishna watched the dancing of the peacocks with His beloveds. It was an amazing sight to see thousands and thousands of dancing peacocks expand their plumage for Radha and Krishna. What wonderful happiness arose when Radha and Krishna also began dancing with the peacocks. The sakhis stood all around and clapped as they watched the wonderful scene which enchanted the world.”
In Sanskrit the word ‘mayura’ means ‘peacock’ and in Hindi it is ‘mora’, which is the present name of this village. This area was famous for its large number of peacocks and even today there are scores of peacocks roaming about in the jungle. There used to be a small lake just before entering the village known as Mayura-kunda, but it has now disappeared. A very wonderful and ecstatic pastime occurred here. One day when Radha and Krishna were sitting at this place in the company of the gopis, suddenly hundreds of peacocks arrived there eager to see the exquisite beauty of the ‘divine lovers’ sitting together in the forest. The peacocks, with their exotic plumage in full array, started dancing in ecstasy due to the unparalleled sight of Radha and Krishna sitting before them.
Upon seeing the ecstatic dancing of the peacocks, Radha and Krishna immediately got up and started dancing along with the peacocks. When the gopis saw Radha and Krishna dancing in that way with the peacocks, their hearts became filled with ecstatic love and they began to clap their hands to the rhythm of the dancing as Radha and Krishna completely enchanted them with Their ecstatic dancing. Because this amazing pastime was enacted at this place the village received the name of Mayura which later became Mora.
