Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami
From the book “Sri Vraja-maṇḍala-parikramā”:
The eternal area–protector (kṣetra-pāla) on Mathurā’s western side is Bhūteśvara Mahādeva. In the same temple compound is the cave of Pātāla–devī, whom Kaṁsa worshipped, and a little further on are Potrā–kuṇḍa, Ādikeśava and Śrī Kṛṣṇa Janma–sthāna, which have already been described.

From the book “Chaurasi-kosa Vraja Mandala Parikrama”:
This is one of the most famous temples of Lord Shiva in the whole of Vraja. The Shiva-linga was established by Vajranabha five thousand years ago as one of the dig-palas, or protecting Deities of Vrindavana Dhama. Bhuteshwara is also one of the kshetra-palas protecting the western side of Mathura. It is said in the Vishnu Purana, “Mathura is the abode of Mahadeva, the Deity of all Deities and a great devotee of Lord Hari. Mahadeva executed his penances at Mathura.” Located in this same temple is the Deity of Pateleshvara Devi that was one of the four Deities of Devi established by Vajranabha Maharaja.
According to some traditions, the Vraja Mandala parikrama which starts on the dvadashi day after Janmasthami from Vrindavana’s Madana-mohana Mandira, proceeds directly to the Bhuteshwara Mahadeva where prayers and sankalpa are offered. The next day which is trayodashi, the Vraja Mandala parikrama proceeds to Madhuvana.
